Solid Waste Information
Landfills and Container Sites are for Madison County Residents Only. Please report any misuse to the Sheriff’s Office. Each residence is assessed one Solid Waste unit at $94.00 per household on property taxes. Businesses are charged accordingly.
A person transporting Solid Waste on a public highway, shall attach, cover or otherwise secure the load sufficiently to prevent littering.
LANDFILLS
Madison County has two class III landfills.
Items Accepted at Landfills
All inert items such as untreated wood waste, metal, appliances, tires, concrete unpainted with re-bar removed, tree branches, etc. All items need to be sorted for separate disposal.
- Twin Bridges Landfill
Location: 1.5 miles east of Twin Bridges
Hours of Operation: Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday, 9:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Closed Holidays - Ennis Landfill
Location: East of Jeffers, 2.5 miles on Jack Creek Bench Road.
Hours of Operation: Monday, Wednesday & Saturday, 9:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Closed Holidays

CONTAINER SITES
Madison County has container sites located near Silver Star, Twin Bridges, Sheridan, Alder, Virginia City, Ennis, Harrison, Norris, Cardwell and near the Palisade campground in the Upper Madison Valley.- Compactors are located in Ennis, Sheridan and Twin Bridges. Please use the compactor.
- Container Sites are open 24 hours/day.
- Please take all tree branches to either landfill – do not throw in the dumpster.
- Items Accepted at Container Sites
All regular household garbage can be taken to the container sites. Household hazardous waste can usually be legally and safely disposed of at the container site once they are properly prepared. Paints, solvents and other liquid wastes may be air dried or solidified in sand or kitty litter and then double bagged for disposal.
HOUSEHOLD RECYCLING
- Recycling Bins or “Binnies” are located at most container sites.
- Newspapers and their paper inserts, magazines, office paper, and phone books (remove metal binders) are accepted in the newspaper binnie.
- Aluminum and steel cans all go into the same binnie. Please rinse well, labels are OK. No plastic bags please.
- Glass binnies accept all colors of glass. Please rinse well and remove metal rings and lids, labels are OK. No plate glass, as this is a contaminate. No plastic or paper bags please.
- Cardboard can be taken to either the Ennis or Twin Bridges sites where it will be compacted into bales and recycled. The Sheridan and Virginia City sites have a cardboard container which is hauled to Twin Bridges for compacting. Boxes need to be flattened in order to fit into the bin.
- Appliances: Please take all refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners to the Twin Bridges or Ennis landfill. The Freon must be removed prior to disposal. The appliances will then be recycled.
AUTOMOTIVE WASTES
- Car Batteries: Please return to the store where you purchased your new battery.
- Waste Oil: Please solidify in kitty litter or sawdust and place in double bags, or better yet, recycle with a used oil handler. Lickety Lube and D & D Auto in Ennis will take used oil for a small fee.
- Tires: Please take to either landfill. There is no charge for tires at this time.
